Re: Derogatory remarks of NOI Lamont Richardson
Greetings organizers,
This letter follows a rally for Justice for the murder of Rita Young, and telephone conversations today with Cassandra, a female participant for Newark Anti- Violence Coalition. As a People’s Advocate, freedom fighter and Out Black Lesbian, I feel outcast and displaced by members of this coalition by the derogatory remarks regarding someone sexual orientation. I was under the impression that the purpose of this coalition was to uplift and empower our community, and to deter the crime and black on black violence happening in our community. The purpose of yesterday’s rally was a call for Justice for Rita Young, a fifty year old sistah murdered in cold blood and the black on black violence in our streets. There was no reason for Lamont Richardson (NOI Minister of Justice) to make derogatory remarks about gay people at this rally, using the rally for personal agenda. I feel if he has issues with other people lifestyle and wish to dialogue on the issue. Lamont, we can arrange an open forum, if you wish. I respect Free Speech, so let’s talk about it. Let’s talk about how we treat and what we do to each other… Remember, neither one of us have a heaven or hell to put no one in.
Lamont Richardson (NOI Minister of Justice)…This is not democractic, its very oppressive and discriminatory, and should not be coming from someone, who is a representative of Justice and professing to be anti-violence. People can raise issues/concerns about your community that would be very offensive. Why should you be allowed to offend black people without rebuttable. As a representative of the gay and lesbian community, I am asking for a cease and desist on your derogatory remarks because it can create harm to my community. It is totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated. To the organizers of the anti-violence coalition, I would like to have this issue addressed by the coalition members, or even the opportunity for equal airtime to address my own concerns to any, or all necessary parties. As well as develop a Do No Harm to black people agreement.
