31st Annual Portuguese Flag-Raising Ceremony at City Hall
On June 5, 2010, Mayor Cory A. Booker, East Ward Council Member Augusto Amador, Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura, Portuguese Consul-General Dr. Maria Amélia Paiva, and other dignitaries held the 31st Annual Portuguese Flag-Raising Ceremony at City Hall at 920 Broad Street.
The Portuguese community of Newark is one of the largest such in the nation. Portuguese restaurants and taverns in Newark’s Ironbound are popular attractions for visitors. The City is also home to the semi-weekly Portuguese newspaper Luso-Americano. Founded in 1928, it is one of the oldest Portuguese-language newspapers in the United States, and has one of the largest circulations.
Noted Newark residents and public servants of Portuguese descent include Sheriff Fontoura, the nation’s highest-ranking law enforcement officer of Portuguese ancestry; Council Member Amador; Public Safety Director Anthony Campos, Newark Municipal Court Judge Antonio Sebastiao; and Law Department First Assistant Corporation Counsel Ana Pereira.
